Autopilot

Installation of a Raymarine Type 1 linear drive, run by an S3G Smartpilot and ST6002 controller.

Autopilot

Photos, drawings and documentation for the installation of the autopilot in our Gin Fizz ketch. Ours is the GibSea variant, so the drive fits neatly under the aft beds.

We are also installing a Quark-Elec QK-A032 NMEA0183-to-2000 and WiFi bridge. The idea is to connect the S3G autopilot (NMEA0183 and Seatalk) to the wind sensor (Garmin NMEA2000) and to follow waypoints set in the Garmin GPS 521 — all on NMEA 2000.

Wiring notes

From Raymarine support — the S3G can take wind data (for steer-to-wind mode) and waypoints (for GOTO) in via NMEA0183. Baud rate is 4800. Cable connections are on NMEA1 (main body of the S3G); the S3G has RS232 connections.

If a normal connection doesn’t work, try swapping NMEA+ and NMEA−.

If that still doesn’t work, Quark-Elec recommend an RS232-to-RS422 bridge.
